Brilliant Earth

Brilliant Earth, an ethical diamond company asked me to participate in their personality style challenge , which meant creating a mood board around one of their beautiful pieces of jewellery.I considered making up an outfit but then I thought that is what everyone else would do , so I used pictures and text that I thought would look pretty and hopefully work well together.

So , for the first one I was thinking about a  person who could rock a pair of jeans and a  t -shirt , look elegant and uber cool : then I just thought KATE MOSS! Also I think that this piece of jewellery would look really cute with that outfit.

For the second board I was inspired by these beautiful wisteria earrings , and then my train of thought from there was as follows:
-wild flowers
-flower crowns
-" sure to wear some flowers in your hair..."
-how does the rest of that Scott Mackenzie song go again?
-Oh yeah , that was it : "If you're going to San Francisco , be sure to wear some flowers in your hair."
I actually quite like that you have to look just a little more carefully to read the writing because it is in yellow and it is almost camouflaged by the wild flowers.
And for my final creation , I was thinking about "Submarine", that Richard Ayoade film, and about the duffel coats that they wear - which I suppose is sort of a weird thing to think about , but anyway this led me to think about minimalism. Which then made me think of that amazing person , Alexa Chung and how well she does minimalism. And then I thought of minimalist art - so I included an early picture of Bridget Riley in front of some of her work.
I really love that bar necklace it is so simple but beautiful.

If you want to see more of Brilliant Earth's magnificent ethically sourced jewellery then you can visit their website.
...usually this means a Christmas playlist and/or loads of pointless pictures of "Christmas inspo" but I'm busy taking lots of photographs with my new camera ( which means new blog posts for you guys-hooray!)

Santa Dash

This morning I got up at 7.15 , put on a Santa suit and ran 5k.
My two friends , Niamh and Iris joined me as we ran 5 kilometres in the name of charity - taking part in Liverpool's 10th annual "Santa dash"
I'm pretty sure that's the farthest I've ever ran - well at least dressed up as Father Christmas.
Me and Niamh

There was something like 9,000 people running around Liverpool City Centre this morning which led to a lot of very confused tourists.Have a nice Sunday!

Royals and Rebels

A long overdue thank you, is in order to Mattel for sending two really cute Princess Julia shirts and two equally adorable dolls- for the launch of a designer collaboration between Ever After High and some of London's emerging designers. Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo designed bags  for the Ever After High "Rebels" whilst Bobby Abley and Ashley Williams ( of Happy Ashley!!!) designed bags for the  Ever After High "Royals".Which went on sale exclusively at Selfridges London Toy Store back in October along side the dolls that inspired them.

I particularly liked the watercolour painting of "Apple White"  that was printed onto the t-shirt.It think that it kind of looked like Debbie Harry. The other watercolour was also pretty , but I find it just the tiniest bit creepy.

They also sent me a couple of the dolls from the franchise , one being "Briar Beauty" , daughter of Sleeping Beauty , who happens to be an Ever After High "Rebel".I was pleasantly surprised in the sheer detail put into these characters and I'm sure if I was seven again they would make an excellent Christmas present.

My favourite bag was designed by Claire Barrow , I really loved the gothic feel the deep purple velvet adds to this £150 bag.

I think this raccoon bag is really clever and the colours are especially lovely - designed by the always fabulous Ashley Williams!

Isabel Marant pour H&M

I'm super excited for Isabel Marant's collection for H&M to hit the shops. The pieces she's created are really varied ; some classic shapes and fabrics and some more obscure. Monochrome features heavily in this collection as well as prints and colours that are traditionally associated with that of tribal influences.I think collaborations like this are great , because it gives a wider range of people to access clothes as beautiful as this AND they're actually being sold at a reasonable price!

I particularly love the huge black and white jumper/coat used in the most popular campaign photograph. It just looks like the fluffiest , warmest , cosiest thing in the world!
I also really like that cropped jacket with the red beading , I think it's really cute , as is the slate grey coat next to it.I hate to say this but there is something I strongly dislike about the grey midi dress with the ankle boots - it looks so ugh and boring ( I'm sorry if that completely offends you - I don't know what it is about it.. I'm sorry)
Although , when designing for the mass market designers have to take certain criteria into consideration so that's what I'm blaming this on.

Oh and another thing , I assume you are aware of the completely unjust arrest and imprisonment of 28 activists , a videographer and photographer in Russia - known as the Arctic 30 .Well if you haven't, read about it here:greenpeace/arctic30/

They need our support , so please sign the petition (here)to be sent to Russian Ambassador in London which demands the release of these fantastic peaceful protesters - thank you.

Trick or Treat

Happy Halloween everyone!!
I'm in the midst of writing a few pretty exciting posts , but I'm not quite done , so I thought I'd just say "hi"
So , it's that time of year again where everyone runs around demanding sweets from their neighbours whilst wearing various masks and/or capes.I love that episode of Freaks and Geeks where Sam , Bill and Neal go trick or treating - it's the best. It's called Tricks and Treats, you should watch it , I guarantee you will laugh.
Here are a few of my favourite sort of halloween-y songs:

I'll write more soon , but I managed to break my camera so I'm in the middle of trying to regain my photos : oh and also I'll show you my halloween costume within the next few days.
Watch out for all the ghosts and ghouls tonight!

P.S- WHOOOOOWWOOOOOHHHHHHHHWOOOOWWWWOOO! ( failed attempt at being even slightly scary or ghost-like ) And also sorry this post kind of sucked.

On Saturday night I went on a ghost walk called "Shiverpool-Hope Street Shivers" with some of my most rockin' friends to celebrate Helaena's 15th birthday who is one of my bestest pals( I know that bestest isn't a word by the way , guys)!
It was really good fun and at times pretty darn scary!Complete with chilling ghost stories based on facts, creepy tour guides jumping out in alleyways and lots of nervous laughter on our part. Thanks Helaena for a truly chilling evening that nearly left us crying ( that wasn't meant to be sarcastic)!I would really recommend it to anyone who's looking to go on a ghost walk in Liverpool - a genuinely scary night of fun!(quality bit of advertisement - but really, it's awesome)
Here's a few pics that I took during the tour:

Happy Birthday Helaena!

I Am Titanium

This post is going to be different to any of the other posts I have written , I suppose it's a lot more personal and more serious and to be honest it couldn't be further away from fashion or art or music or film. But I am writing this post because it's an important part of me now.
So, the reason I haven't written for so long is because I have actually been in hospital and at home recovering from surgery which I had on my back-because I have idiopathic scoliosis.
Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine , and the fact that it is idiopathic means that the doctors don't actually know what it's caused by.My spine had a 72 degree curve and this is an x ray of what it used to look like:

My operation involved titanium rods and bolts being fixed to my spine to straighten it. Thanks to the amazing surgeons, the operation was very successful and I'm now making a steady recovery.Below is a picture of an x ray of my back after the surgery:
Pretty amazing isn't it?
There are actually quite a few famous figures with scoliosis , like Sarah Michelle Gellar (a.k.a Buffy), Kurt Cobain ,Joan Smalls(supermodel),Liza Minnelli and even King Richard III!
I like the fact that the metal in my back is titanium , it sounds cool.
I felt this song was appropriate , seeing as I am now , titanium:

I want to thank all my family and friends for looking after me and cheering me up whilst I haven't been so well. You guys are awesome! More fashion/movie/music/artsy fartsy posts coming soon - just give me a chance to get back into the swing of things!

Blend in

Hey you guyzz , sorry for the utter lack of posts but I just have been completely distracted by the super hot weather!I was just thinking how I haven't really spoken about any collections recently so I think I'll start doing some more posts about runway soon.
I've noticed the sheer volume of girls dubbed as "Hipsters" wearing camouflage print jackets , I know it's nothing new , in fact , it was most probably back in January when I first appreciated the popularity of the print. And until I saw Christopher Kane's A/W 13 collection , I wasn't exactly a fan.I love the way he interprets and transforms the world of fashion , he alwys keeps everyone guessing his next move. There is something so beautiful about that slate grey and ice white, fur trimmed coat that just pops on the runway. As well as the moody blue dress/coat with yet another lavishing of luxurious fur , not forgetting the heavily textured, over sized jacket in muddy greens, dull purples and pale blues.

It's definitely not the weather for these clothes though, but if I had the chance, I would wear them with such pride and joy in this baking heat...even if I did collapse of heat stroke.
I saw this on Twitter a while back and I found it rather amusing :
not being able to find all your mates because you're all wearing camouflage jackets

Interview avec REJINA PYO !!!

Rejina Pyo is a Korean born fashion designer based in London ,her work often incorporates modern architecture and sculpture with beautifully fluid fabrics. After graduating from MA fashion at Central Saint Martins ,Rejina was taken on by Roksanda IIincic and began work as her first assistant designer.A year later she left to work on a commission she received which was part of the Hans Nefkens award , she was also chosen to create a range of designs for Weekday that were based on her highly recognised CSM (Central Saint Martins ) MA show at London Fashion Week.As well as her designs being featured in the "ARRRGH!Monsters in Fashion" exhibition.
I was lucky enough to meet this highly talented designer at fashion week back in February, and several months later I asked Rejina if she would consider doing an interview with me for this little blog and she very kindly said yes! Thanks so much to Rejina for agreeing to do this interview , it is very much appreciated!I was really excited for her responses to my questions, and if you want to know what Rejina has to say about her award winning Central Saint Martins collection , her early ambitions or her response to that very important question Diamonds or Pearls? - then read on!

How does art influence your designs (and who are your favourite artists)?
I love simple abstract shapes and blocks of colours and also modern art and sculptures. Art is very close to my heart and I am always inspired by it. I love to look at art and study to know the idea behind them. I don’t have a ‘favourite’ artist but in my graduate collection at CSM I took inspiration from one of my favourite artwork, for example paintings by Ellsworth Kelly from the 50s and sculpture work from Isamu Noguchi.

Do you have a favourite model or someone you'd really like to wear your designs?
-I do not have a favourite but I admire all of those women that know who they are , quietly confident , effortlessly elegant.

It's clear how much time and energy goes into fashion collections -how did you go about creating your graduate collection at CSM?
-The simple, primitive aesthetic and block colours of Ellsworth Kelly, and others like him, is what drove my collection. I wanted to achieve something that was elegant and unrestricted, which is why I chose those fabrics. The bright coloured silk (or fluids) and the linen, which gives a raw and organic look. I chose these two fabrics as the texture, weight and movement play against each other beautifully.

A lot of very talented individuals like yourself learn in CSM, was there any of rivalry/competition with so much flowing creative energy?
-Yes of course. It was very intense and competitive, full of passion and tears!

I heard that your mother worked in fashion as well - do you think that had an affect on your choice to go into fashion?
-Yes, my mum was a fashion designer when she was young (she’s now an interior designer & painter). From looking at her sketchbooks to wrapping myself in fabric and playing with it, fashion was just everywhere for me. I didn't have a point when I decided to become a fashion designer. It was more of a natural thing.
Quick fire question round:
Chocolate or ice cream?
Paris or New York?
Neons or Pastels?
  Depends on how I feel!
Daisies or Daffodils?
Princesses or Unicorns?
Miu Miu or Prada?
Floral or Animal print?
Pizza or Sushi?
Diamonds or Pearls?
  Together! :)
Below are some of Rejina's beautiful Spring/Summer 2013 designs.
Kate ( the reason I'm putting my name here rather than right at the end as always ,is because the text at the bottom has gone weird  on blogger and it's all very confusing , so..)

Freaks and Geeks

Ugh , what is wrong with me? Last week I apologised for not posting enough and then not post for over a week!
Oh well , my excuse is that I've been too busy listening to music and watching Freaks and Geeks; and that always makes me smile. For the those of you who are not aware, Freaks and Geeks is the best American Comedy Programme of the 90's/00's.I was made aware of it's existence by a couple of really cool bloggers and I strongly recommend you watch it.It is so funny!I was really sad when I found out that they only made one series , because it's so good that you don't want it to end! Bill is probably my favourite character , but Nick is so fab as well , actually I love them all!

Last week , I wrote another article for The Muse TV , check it out :
